The Eastern Community Association is a non-political community association which began in 2003 as the Yamacraw Community Development Association. The mission of the Association is to positively impact the lives of the residents of the eastern community through youth, sports, cultural, social and environmental development. Our goal is to improve eastern communities through partnership and outreach.

Major events for the association are the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Carolling Service and the Annual Community Festival which also serves as the major fundraiser for the Association and its ECA Youth Marching and Concert Band.

The ECA exists to make the eastern end of New Providence a group of vibrant, engaging and safe areas to raise a family and enjoy our environment. Eventually, we aim to cultivate active community associations in those townships where these associations currently do not exist.

The former Minister of Social Services and Community Development and current Member of Parliament, Melanie S. Griffin was influential in the formation of the Yamacraw Community Development Association and its role as a liason between eastern residents and their representatives. The ECA continues this effort by working with the respective Members of Parliament, who attend our meetings, to improve local conditions such as road clearing, installing speed bumps and discussing ways in which we can improve our streets and maintain our property values. The Association also partners with the Community Outreach Division of the Elizabeth Estates Police Station to provide crime reports and give presentations on staying safe in our area.

Another part of community building is working with non-governmental organizations such as The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas and The Bahamas National Trust to present information on creating sustainable cultural events and improving our environment. The association also invites speakers from government organizations to explain plans for the area and major projects that affect us all.
